How to Choose A Wild Bird Feeder
Wild birds can provide hours of quiet enjoyment; viewing their antics splashing in a water feature, sorting
through seeds in a wild bird feeder and interacting with one another. This simple means of connecting with nature
has become a favorite pastime of many people, young and old.
Birds are fascinating creatures. They are also beautiful examples of nature; different sizes, shapes and colors. It
is hard to improve upon the innate loveliness of brilliant red cardinals, royal bluebirds, sunny yellow chickadees
or bright orange orioles that are seen in their natural habitat. A veritable rainbow of flying feathered friends
can fill your backyard with their gorgeous appearance, not to mention the captivating behaviors of mating rituals
or simple pleasure in a warm summer’s day. Taking the opportunity to observe birds in their natural habitat has
proven to be not only an enjoyable experience but a therapeutic one, as well.
There are many people who equip themselves with all of the latest equipment in cameras, binoculars and clothing in
order to traverse into the woods and underbrush to view birds in nature. This can be a very satisfying
experience.
It is not the only means of enjoying this activity, however. Just as much satisfaction can be gained in your own
backyard with the help of a wild bird feeder; perhaps more so if you wish to attract and observe a certain species
of bird. Bluebirds, for example, are drawn to millet and fruit such as oranges. Cardinals enjoy fruit as well as
suet, nuts and sunflower seeds. Delightful finches are fond of niger and black oil sunflower seeds served up in
tubular feeders. Hummingbirds will flock to a yard amply supplied with sweet nectar in special feeders.
When choosing a feeder, the first step will be to determine the effect you seek to achieve. Many types of wild bird
feeders may be used. If there is a specific bird species you wish to attract, research their feeding preferences to
know the type of feeder to use to draw them into your yard. The food source they prefer will often dictate which
type of feeder would be best to offer that food. For an assortment of bird species, a platform feeder may offer the
best variety.
Bird watching is an activity that virtually anyone can enjoy and, with the help of a wild bird feeder, there are few limits on which birds you will be able to
observe. It is a simple and therapeutic means of connecting with nature while providing the birds with
a basic need of food.
