Using Squirrel Proof Bird Feeders
They are cute, captivating and energetic, but unless you have squirrel proof bird feeders set up in
your yard, they can also be the biggest pain in your backside as you try to draw birds to your feeders. There is
certainly room for both of nature’s creatures in your yard, but you will definitely want to draw the territorial
line to keep order.
Squirrels are crafty creatures that can and will find their way into traditional bird feeders and rob them of the
delicious seeds, nuts and fruits that you have painstakingly placed to attract a variety of birds. It is a misnomer
to believe that you can be smarter than the squirrels while still using standard hanging or platform feeders. With
the ability to leap long distances, climb great heights and eat huge amounts, these furry tree creatures will
outwit you every time. In order to enjoy the beauty and grace of the feathered as well as furry friends, you will
need to invest in squirrel proof bird feeders.
Undoubtedly the best of these rodent resistant feeders are those which are caged. Enclosed in closely partitioned
metal fencing, birds are able to perch on the wire and access the food within while squirrels cannot. Baffled
feeders are also a smart choice; a transparent dome is placed over the top of the feeder to confound the pesky
rodents from jumping onto the feeder. Still other feeders feature spring loaded perches that recognize the heavy
weight of a squirrel and immediate close off access to the food within.
Some people have good luck with fending off advances of squirrels through strategic placement of their feeders.
While squirrels are expert jumpers and very agile climbers, they will have a difficult time getting to a feeder
that is outside of their jumping distance. In addition, if the pole mount is slick, the rodents are unable to climb
it. Placing the feeders a distance of ten feet or more from any type of perch from which the squirrel can get a
good leap will likely ensure that they will be unable to get to the food contained in the feeder.
Still other individuals simply acquiesce to the cute little squirrels by providing their own feeders.
Unfortunately, squirrels are simple creatures that will not be able to distinguish between their own food and that
which is offered to birds.
The best way to manage squirrels that are “squirreling” away the food meant for birds is to invest in squirrel proof bird feeders. While they are entertaining to watch, it will mean fewer
birds in your yard without them.
